This pathfinder has been designed to help ENG4CI students in their research of a Media Effects topic to aid in the development of a personal presentation, interactive activity, and annotated bibliography. It was created by J. Mitchinson-Schwartz November 8, 2015.

Please refer to the assignment below for guidance and download a copy here:
Overview of Media Effects: The Frankfurt School of Thought on media effects is considered passive and involves the study of "what does media do to people", while the Uses and Gratification theory is considered active and involves the study of "what do people do with media".
  • Uses and Gratification Theory
  • Frankfurt School of Thought | The Effects of Media
For more information on these two schools of thought, view the ENG4CI powerpoint here: Media Effects on Audiences

Because many topics are controversial, a great place to start research for media effects topics is by looking at Wikipedia. Often, the shared notes can give you a good idea about issues of contention surrounding the topic.

Check out the physical bookcart your librarian has on the subject to see some subtopics that have been pulled. Non-fiction books tend to be found in the 300s under Social Sciences, particularly the 302s and 303s. The 600s have books on Technology.
